Job Title: Laser Safety Observer for Visual Aircraft Spotting

Reports to: Principal Scientist

FLSA Status: Part-Time (Non-Exempt)

Department: Space Science

 

Position Description:

  • Applied Optimization (AO) is an engineering R&D firm performing atmospheric research using laser ranging in the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum
  • This is a challenging position with direct hands-on responsibilities for ensuring safe laser operations and compliance with laser safety standards and regulations
  • This position is well suited for a conscientious worker who has excellent concentration skills and can work a flexible schedule
  • The position is part-time, year-round, and work is typically performed outside during nighttime hours in a variety of weather conditions. The hours are flexible and can change from one week to another, sometimes on short notice

 

Essential Functions:

  • Perform aircraft spotting duties to ensure laser illuminations comply with FAA and LCH regulations and guidelines
  • Perform quality assurance of training, processes, and procedures
  • Follow all written and oral instructions related to laser operations
  • Perform functionality checks on spotter equipment
  • Ensure effective communications between laser and telescope operators and aircraft spotters
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Distant Visual Acuity (vision) corrected to 20/20, normal visual fields, and no pathology of the eye
  • Effective oral communication skills, especially over short-range radio
  • Adequate hearing for use of short-range radio communications
  • Ability to gaze upward for extended periods of time and stand for a minimum of 50 minutes at a time followed by 10-minute breaks
  • Ability to judge distances of objects in the sky
  • Flexible schedule
  • Ability to work outside during nighttime hours in a variety of weather conditions
  • Ability to travel at night to/from observatory site near Springfield, OH
  • Attention to detail and effective time and schedule management skills
  • Effective organizing, planning, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to adapt within a small team to support evolving customer requirements
  • Ability to execute instructions and communication in written, oral, and diagram form
  • Demonstrated strong writing, fact-gathering, and analytical skills
  • Effective written communication skills; ability to read, write, speak and understand English at a level sufficient to follow written policies and procedures; complete a variety of basic forms; and interact with customers and co-workers, including understanding and responding to specific questions

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge or experience in navigating astronomical coordinate systems and the night sky
  • Strong interest in astronomy and telescopes
  • Effective problem-solving skills

 

Citizenship/Security Clearance Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizen and Green Card Holder
