Job Title: Deep Space Electro-Optical Observations Engineer

Reports to: Space Team Lead

FLSA Status: Full-Time (Exempt)

 

Position Description:

  • Applied Optimization (AO) is an engineering R&D firm performing day and night observations of the sky in the visible and infrared wavelengths, along with archiving, processing, and analyzing the collected data
  • This is a challenging position with direct hands-on responsibility for operating and maintaining telescopes, astronomical instrumentation, lasers, and observatory monitoring equipment, such as a weather station
  • Successful candidate must be a meticulous, detail-oriented individual who brings consistent quality and reliability to the collection and archiving of experimental results
  • This position is a key component of an interdisciplinary research and development team that collects data to analyze and implement next-generation scientific algorithms in the area of space science and atmospheric research

 

Essential Functions:

  • Operates and maintains the telescopes and instrumentation including computer systems
  • Conducts experiment planning and data collection
  • Conducts data reduction and processing
  • Coordinates and trains a small team of aircraft spotters, laser and telescope operators, and data processors
  • Conducts effective and efficient customer relations that include regular meetings, status updates, and technical reports
  • Maintains and operates a laser system for research
  • Provides general support services as required
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher with a consistently superior academic record in physics, astronomy, or other similar field of study
    • Possesses knowledge of basic scientific principles and problem solving skills normally obtained through a curriculum for a Bachelor’s degree
  • Interest in and possesses a basic and/or amateur knowledge of astronomy
  • Ability to work well independently and without close supervision
  • Ability to consult with senior scientists to maximize the scientific results of the experiments
  • Ability to operate scientific instrumentation and collect, calibrate, and record data
  • Ability to analyze data and compile meaningful results into presentations and reports
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office suite
  • Physically capable of working different shifts and performing tasks in and around observatories
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Effective problem solving skills
  • Attention to detail and effective time and schedule management skills
  • Ability to adapt within a small team to support evolving customer requirements

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of computers and digital recording of sensor data, such as CCDs
  • Aptitude in electronics and computers
  • Familiarity with Windows OS and Linux OS (Ubuntu)
  • Aptitude with a programming language, preferably Python, C++, C#, and/or SQL
  • Optics laboratory experience
  • Familiarity with Government property accountability procedures

 

Citizenship/Security Clearance Requirements:

  • U.S. Green Card holder or U.S. citizen
  • May be required to obtain and maintain U.S. Government Security Clearance
